Developing Products for an Identified Need
Designers do not design for the sake of designing, they usually try and make things better or to fulfill a particular need, i.e. overcome a problem.Designers often carry out research to find out if they can make their products better or if they can get ideas from what consumers would want in the future.
Self Heating Gloves
Consumers who took part in winter sports often found that their hands got cold when out in cold temperatures for long periods of time. Designers felt there was a niche market for heated gloves that would help keep people warmer for longer. This innovation was a state of the art self heating ski glove which was lightweight and was particularly useful for for people with poor circulation.
Highly specialized conductors have been attached inside the fabric and an efficient lithium battery provides the power. These gloves can last several hours on one charge.

Baby Feeding Products
Designers are always looking at making things safer, especially when it comes to the very young, old or disabled. Designers for 'Tommee Tippee' developed a heat sensitive spoon to make sure that babies were fed food at the correct temperature. When it was too hot it changed colour. This was done using a 'smart' material.
