Products nowadays are not usually designed from scratch (except if you are a Dyson!!) and a lot can be influenced from:

Which? magazine provides product reviews which are not biased and are good at comparing similar products:

Top Gear also have a "Cool Wall' where they evaluate different cars but not to the depth that which does!
In school we use ACCESSFM as a starting point from product analysis. You can also use WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW!
