JIT (Just in Time)JIT is used by many large manufacturers:
The JIT System has the underlying philosophy to meet customer orders: - with a quality product - minimal delay and - effective use of resources Often called 'Lean' manufacturing as it focusses on giving customers value for money by reducing wastage. The storage of materials and components cost money: - space - heating - ventilation - transportation All this adds cost to the manufacturing that cuts into profits or increases costs. JIT is where components arrive at the production line just when they are needed and computerised stock control is the key. It also ensures that products leave the line ready to be Wastage is reduced through: - loss of storage space - Defective products (no room for low quality so joint responsibility for quality - all components/products being used (no excess stock left over or manufactured goods unsold) - Movement of product through the factory reduced - System makes maximum use of equipment - no waiting time between processes - Appropriate use of skilled labour - Based on simplicity so all unnecessary functions removed - Detailed planning for end of one product to commencement of next to reduce downtime
